April labor report: Job market adds 177,000 new jobs; unemployment remains unchanged

The US labor market beat economist’s expectations with 177,000 new jobs added in April, while the unemployment rate remained unchanged from March’s report at 4.2% according to the Bureau of Labor Statistics.

Healthcare accounted for some of the largest job gains, with 51,000 new roles added.
Government added 10,000 new jobs. However, federal government employment declined by 9,000 last month and is down 26,000 since the beginning of this year.
Leisure and hospitality added 24,000 new roles last month, while the professional and business services sector added 17,000 jobs in April.
