As virtual interviews become more common, it’s important that you’re fully prepared to make a great impression. While the interview setting may be different, the goal is the same: to showcase your skills and professionalism.

Here are five tips to help set you up for success during your next virtual interview.

Dress professionally

Even though the interview is virtual, it’s crucial to still dress professionally. Wearing appropriate attire helps set the right tone and builds confidence. However, dressing for a virtual interview involves different components than in-person. For example, choose soft colors and avoid patterned materials. If you wear glasses, ensure your lighting is positioned so there won’t be any glare.

Test your technology

Before the interview, ensure your internet connection, camera, and microphone are working properly. Familiarize yourself with the software (Zoom, Microsoft Teams, etc.) prior to logging on for the call. Also, it may be helpful to perform a test call with a friend or family member to check audio and video quality before your interview.

Choose a quiet, well-lit space

Find a quiet, distraction-free area with good lighting to hold your interview. Natural light is ideal, but artificial light will also work if you are positioned in a way that lessens shadows on your face. Avoid sitting with your back to a window, as it can make you appear silhouetted.

Prepare your surroundings

Make sure your background is clean and uncluttered. If needed, use a virtual background to keep the focus on you, but avoid anything too distracting. Also, prepare your virtual surroundings – silence your phone, close unnecessary tabs, and turn off notifications on your computer. Staying focused is key.

Practice speaking clearly

Virtual interviews might have slight delays or glitches. Practice speaking clearly and at a moderate pace, and make sure to pause after answering questions to allow the interviewer time to respond. Maintain eye contact by looking into the camera, not at your own image on the screen.

By following these tips, you can approach your virtual interview with confidence and professionalism. Testing your tech, perfecting your setting, and practicing your responses are great ways to make the most out of your interview.
